Facebook, Lies and Mad Black Hatters

Ok am about to have a teeny tiny RANT!Social Media Liars

I have had two new clients come to me both with very suspicious attitude and loads of fear around using social media. Why?

Because of information they have been given by so-called marketing and social marketing ‘experts.’ Well you know what an expert is don’t you?

He-he X is an unknown quantity and a ‘spurt’ is a drip under pressure, LOL.

The Case of the Spread of Facebook False Information

Client #1 came to me about 6 months ago, she rang and told me she knew she needed to get onto social media with her programs, BUT she had learned via a seminar presented by a New Zealand social media ‘expert’, that she had to tread very very carefully and only with their help could she hope to avoid the pitfalls of Facebook.

  • She was told that if she grew her page too quickly Facebook would delete it once she got to more than 5000 fans – FALSE
  • She was told to avoid ever having a personal Facebook account attached to her business page – FALSE
  • She was told that Facebook Pages had to be controlled by registered social media experts – um… FALSE

and I’d like to know what association these experts are registered with??

Not one of these lies is true, perhaps lies is too strong a word and this is just misinformation, however as I see it if you are going to call yourself an expert on Facebook or social media you could not in all good conscience spread this kind of misinformation without knowing the truth.

So many people calling themselves experts and so much false information so I'm having a rant!

Selling in The Age of The Socially Enlightened Business

Media_httpfarm1static_dyoia

You’ve got to love freshly trained door to door sales people don’t you?

Those eager young men earnestly using poor sales tactics on you at the door, because that is what they have been taught to do, by companies who continue to use old marketing strategies as hackneyed and predictable as a Roadrunner cartoon laughable of course, but predictable.

I have two in the past fortnight come to my door one to sell me a subscription to paid TV and another who insisted that if I showed my electricity account to me he could prove his was cheaper. Uhuh!

Both used similar, fear-of-lack techniques what was I missing out on? In one instance it was access to the movies and shows of my choice including all the sports channels, he did make me smile when my statement that I hated watching sports left him speechless, lol.

The other was doing his best to play into any fear I had around not having the best deal. Now, Yes, these still work, however the foot-in-the-door approach to stay talking and insisting until I gently shut the door in their faces do not! The young man from the electricity account actually told me he could not leave until I had showed him my electricity account. Bless him… Bye!

AND then there are those lovely tactless and needy people from the Asian countries who cannot believe that you just don’t want another phone, or better yet the ones who are ringing from Microsoft very worried about the state of your Windows platform. When told there is no way they could possibly have access to my Windows or my computer without my approval they insist because they work for Microsoft they do, I then let them know they are in fact breach of about 100 international privacy laws and hang up.

What about those people who email you twice a week with the latest “Amazing deal!!!” on something you may or may not have use for? Internet marketers, used car salesmen same-o same-o… In fact I was privy to a private webinar the other day for the older internet marketers, you know the ones who try to find ways around the system, and the algorithms that are gradually making it harder and harder to phish, spam or irritate.

I found it absolutely fascinating, they were informing all the listeners including myself about the new changes to the internet and how these changes were going to severely hamper their style. Apparently the major search engines and free email services are going to be keeping an eye on your emails and if you are sending too many emails of a certain type or just too many emails from your email address your emails will be stopped before they are sent to your recipient. There are other changes as well such as Google severely limiting the ability of landing pages, squeeze pages and microsite to rank or even be seen.

For me this is welcome news! How about you?

Would you like to know the answers, tips and tactics to counter these regulatory moves? I thought you might, lol.

Entrepreneurial Strategies for Small Business Owners

We all like to think we are entrepreneurs don’t we?

However most business owners are not. Just owning a business doesn’t qualify you as an entrepreneur, there are some very basic skill sets and attitudes that differentiate the average business owner from the entrepreneur.

Many smaller business owners have in truth just traded one job for another, and where they work longer hours for less money! This is a person who is really a self-employed mindset, notice the word ‘employed’ it says it all, these people have an employee mindset rather than an enterprising mindset. If this sounds like you, perhaps you will benefit from reading on :)

The entrepreneurial mindset is characterised by a few very definite attitudes, belief patterns and actions...

Are you ready to be an entrepreneur or have you just traded one job for another?

Passion, Potential and Success Like Kung Fu Panda

Have you ever watched the kids movie Kung Fu Panda? If you haven’t you are so missing out!

Filled with humour and homily, there is a place in the movie where the Panda, played by Jack Black finds that the one thing he spent his whole life wanting to do with all his heart seems to be beyond his reach.

…and then, Panda in the kitchen eating because he that’s what he does when he is upset, it’s his fall back behaviour, you know the behaviour pattern we have that helps us stay marching in place and prevents us from achieving our potential, our dreams and success? What’s your fall back behaviour, something you love to do, but it is one that seems not to have any use to you perhaps it even seems to be your downfall, your achilles heel?

Well enough of that for now, let’s get back to the story, there’s Panda eating and eating and all the while he is in a bit of a frenzy, busting through cupboard doors with one punch and climbing to the top shelf easily and doing the splits which seemed impossible while he was trying to learn. Funny thing while he was doing something he loved, he could suddenly use all the skills he found so difficult when he wasn’t doing what he loved.

His mentor (sensei) was also able to suddenly see Panda’s potential too, and saw the way to finally teach this seemingly useless pupil how to reach his potential and step into his purpose. He too had to let go of his beliefs about how a Kung Fu pupil would act and learn and find a way to help Panda. The next scenes show Sensei teaching Panda using food in many ways, and we see Panda easily doing what he found so difficult before.

Huge AHA! right there! read more...
